Nuturing the Practice of Yoga with Kindness and Compassion

Frequently Asked Questions

Where to Begin?

Coming to a yoga studio for the first time can be intimidating, especially if you’ve never done yoga before. We have complied a list of common questions to make your first class in the studio even more enjoyable. As always, if you have questions or are unsure what classes might be right for you, please don’t hesitate to call us.

  • What should I wear?

The best clothing for yoga is comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. We do practice barefoot but you may find having socks for centering at the beginning and end of class may make you more comfortable.

  • Do I need to bring anything with me?

Bring yourself! We are fully equipped with mats and props for all our students. There is NO additional rental fees for mats or props except for our ball class.

As you expand your practice, we strongly urge you to invest into your own mat and props for home use but you are always free to use ours for in-studio classes.

  • Do I need to signup for each class?

Yes - We have limited space and this is the only way to guarantee your spot! If you find that you will not be able to make the class please cancel through the Southern Lotus App or call the studio at 678-961-5937. We do not like to have to charge you for a class you did not attend, so please cancel beforehand so we can give the spot to another student.

  • Are there any age restrictions?

Children below the ages of 14 are not allowed into our yoga classes. If you or your child wish to enroll, please keep in mind our classes are designed for adults. We ask that parents ensure their child is ready and able to stay quiet and respectful in the yoga class. This helps to ensure all practitioners experience a calm and peaceful practice.

Children 16-18 may attend classes by themselves with parental consent if their presence does not disrupt the class environment.

  • Should I eat before coming to class?

We recommend waiting at least 2 hours between your last meal and practicing. We understand you are likely to get hungry between that meal and class. If this occurs, we advise a light snack, such as fruit or nuts, up to 30 minutes prior to class. Always drink plenty of water before, during, and after a class.

  • When should I arrive?

Please aim to arrive 10-15 minutes early to set up your mat and to begin to center yourself before class starts. We know McDonough traffic can be a challenge, so let us know if you are running late and we can reserve a space for you in the back of the room.

*if running late, please enter and set up quietly (Door locks 10 minutes after class begins)

In Studio Commonly Asked Questions

  • What should I do when I arrive?

It's simple as 1-2-3. Come inside, take your shoes off and put them under the benches. A teacher will greet you to get you checked in! See that was easy!

We do ask that you inform the teacher if you have any physical concerns before the class so we can ensure a pain free experience. If you prefer, you can add any physical or medical concerns in the Southern Lotus App. Our app is HIPAA certified, so your information remains private and safe.

  • Should I bring my cell phone?

We ask that you leave your cell phone in your vehicle or in our back room. If you need to bring your cell phone into the studio, please ensure you place it on SILENT mode BEFORE entering the studio. This allows for any classes going on to be uninterrupted.

*If you must have your phone with you for any reason, please let the teacher know prior to the beginning of class. You can set your mat up in a space you can quietly and easily excuse yourself to take the call (back room or outside the studio down the side walk.)

  • I’ve checked in and found my mat, what do I do?

First and Foremost - LISTEN to your body.

Yoga is a great way to release tension and stress. Whether you are moving through a quick paced flow class or releasing everything by relaxing in a restorative class, always listen to your body. Every body is different, so RESPECT where your body is and never push to a point of pain. Anytime you feel discomfort, back off, find a comfortable modification or take a break in child’s pose. Don't worry, if you don't know what child's pose is, we will more than likely show you in your very 1st class!

Next the teacher will take his or her place on their mat, usually at the front of the studio. Listen to their cues. They will guide you through this yoga journey, every step of the way.

  • Do I have to stay at the very end during the cool down portion (known as Savasana)?

Savasana is a crucial part of the practice and a pose all its own, so please try not leave before your entire practice is completed.

*If you must leave class early, please notify the teacher beforehand and set up at the back of the room, so you can quietly leave before Savasana has begun; if you know you will be leaving early, please be mindful to try to take a small Savasana on your own before leaving as this pose integrates all the benefits of your practice.

  • After class is completed, what do I do with my mat and props?

We ask that you please clean your mat and props at the end of each class so that is sanitized and place them back on the shelves!
